Overview
Waythrough (formerly Humankind) supports LGBT+ people aged 11 to 25 years old in South Tyneside.
They offer friendly, practical support around gender identity and / or sexual orientation.
They also provide the opportunity to meet other LGBT+ young people.
Support available
Waythrough provide:
- 1-2-1 bespoke support which aims to reduce anxiety, lack of confidence and improve not only the health and wellbeing of young people, but also help them to explore their sexual or gender identity and sense of self in a safe, non-judgemental way
- advice and support to families
- accredited LGBT+ training to professionals
They also operate a weekly group which gives young people the chance to interact and build relations with others.
Support for people with special educational needs and disabilities
Over 80% of the young people the organisation support have a SEND diagnosis.
Staff take time to learn about every young person individually and recognise their own unique needs and wants.
They will help to make the young person as comfortable as possible, such as:
- communicating through various means, verbal or non-verbal, whatever is most appropriate for the young person
- not limiting sessions to one hour if they need to be extended
- allowing them to bring someone to accompany them if they would prefer
- delivering sessions at a location most comfortable to the young person
