Overview
Connexions South Tyneside provides independent and impartial careers information, advice and guidance to young people aged between 16 and 18, and up to 25 if they have a special educational need or disability.
Connexions Advisers can support young people to make positive choices about their future with information about:
- college courses
- apprenticeships
- 6th form
- employment
- training
Support available
Connexions Advisers support young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who are in year 11.
Young people aged between 16 and 25 years old with an EHCP may also be eligible for support from the service.
Young people in year 11
Young people in year 11 with an EHCP (within mainstream and specialist schools) will have an allocated Connexions Adviser.
Your adviser can support you with making informed choices about your next steps in relation to education, employment or training.
This support is offered in the following ways:
- Personal guidance, which can be one-to-one or supported by your parents / carers
- Your Connexions Adviser can provide information and advice regarding suitable post 16 options based on your skills, interests, aspirations and support needs.
- Your Connexions Adviser may attend your Year 11 EHCP annual review and will support you with preparing for the transition into post 16 education, employment or training and into adulthood
- Your Connexions Adviser can provide practical support with completing application forms and attending transition visits and advocating on your behalf if needed.
Post 16
Young People with an EHCP up to the age of 25 may also be eligible for support.
Support can be offered in the following ways:
- Attendance at transitional EHCP reviews
- Completion of a report that feeds into the EHCP process
- Personal guidance
- Information about open days and transitional events that may help you make informed choices about your next steps
- Practical support in completing applications, attending transition visits and advocating on your behalf
- Supporting you with the preparation for adulthood and future independence
Who can access the service
Year 11
All South Tyneside students in Year 11 with an EHCP.
Post 16
All young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) aged 16 to 18 years old (and up to 25 years old with an EHCP).
Young People who are in education, employment or training (EET) aged 16 to 25 years old with an EHCP may be eligible for our service.
How to access the service
If you are in Year 11, your adviser will contact you or your parents / carers to arrange an initial appointment.
They will also be invited to attend your Year 11 EHCP review.
If you have left school (Post 16) and would like to enquire about support that you may be able to access, please contact the service.
