Overview

The Children's and Young People's Bladder and Bowel service offers a confidential, friendly service from a qualified children's nurse, who is a specialist in continence problems. We see all children and young people aged between 0 and 19 years old, including those with disabilities who experience problems with their bladder and bowel.

Children and young people will already have worked with their Health Visitor or School Nurse but will need further intervention.

We carry out a comprehensive assessment and work closely with parents / carers when they complete 3 day bladder and 2 week bowel charts. This information is used to develop care / treatment plan agreed with you and your child for them to reach their full potential of continence.

We support children and young people with:

  • Constipation
  • Soiling
  • Frequent need to use the toilet during the day to pass urine (more than seven times)
  • Need to dash urgently to go to the toilet to pass urine
  • Daytime and night time wetting
  • Delay in developing toileting skills

We also support families:

  • To assist their child / young person with individual toilet programmes
  • Provide advice about appropriate toileting products, aids, and equipment (when necessary)
  • Refer to other services if needed

We review children / young people every 3 to 4 months if needed.  

The service also manages continence products service and prescribe specialist products that are unavailable through the 0 - 19 Service.


Support available

Most of the children and young people referred to our service have some level of special needs which usually means development delay and toileting requires additional time to be established.

The service support children and young people with SEND by way of specialist assessment and use of guidelines from national bodies such as toilet training for children with additional needs, Guidance for the provision of continence containment products to children and young people 2021.


Who can access the service

Children and young people aged 0 to 19 years.

Children and young people will already have worked with their Health Visitor or School Nurse but will need further intervention. We ask for evidence that a Level 1 assessment has been completed by a health professional who has worked with families for at least 12 weeks. Further intervention will be need to manage the condition.


How to access the service

You can self refer by email.

Health professionals  can refer (level 1 assessment, including bladder and bowel charts will need to be completed).

For containment products:

  • Professionals need to complete a level 1 assessment - give appropriate advice complete a paediatric scoring tool
  • Parent's to complete 3 day bladder and 2 week bowel chart, to check the health of the bladder and bowel.

Advice will be offered, and a reassessment is recommended after 6 months to see if issuing containment products is more suitable at this time.

Reassessment must take place annually.
