Overview

Community Eating Disorder Service (CEDS)

CEDS are a community eating disorder service who offer assessment and evidence based treatment for children and young people presenting with an eating disorder in keeping with the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for eating disorders: recognition and treatment and the Access and Waiting Time Standards for Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder (2015).


Support available

If any patients are identified with SEND, clinicians working with the patient and families will link in with the school, Educational Psychologists, CYPS mental health teams or learning disability teams in order to meet any additional needs.


Who can access the service

Children and Young People from ages 8 to 18 who present with an eating disorder. This includes:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • OSFED
  • Atypical presentations

How to access the service

Referral process

The service will accept self-referrals as well as referrals from any relevant professional, this includes:

  • general practitioners (GPs)
  • school nurses
  • social workers
  • special educational needs
  • disabilities coordinator(s) (SENDCOs)
  • voluntary and community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector)

Referrals will be triaged, and risks will be assessed by a registered practitioner with appropriate eating disorder experience and categorised as either urgent or routine.

For more complex cases advice will be given in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting(s).

Referrals can be made:

  • by telephone
  • through the online CYPS referral form
  • in a secure email or letter

If a referral is received into CYPS Teams they are triaged and signposted into CEDS

If a referral is received from Paediatrics this is considered an emergency appointment. A member of CEDS will attend the acute hospital setting to undertake assessment within 24 hours / next working day if over the weekend.

If an urgent appointment is required, the duty worker will arrange with a member of the CEDS Team for a 5-day appointment to be offered.

If a standard appointment is required, the referral will be taken to the team meeting and an appointment will be arranged within 28 days with request for attendance at GP surgery with the following 5 days if they have not been seen within 5 days of referral as per AWTS.
