Overview

Opticians can:

  • help with glasses or contact lenses to improve eyesight
  • check eye health

You may be prescribed glasses, or you may be referred onto a GP or a hospital eye clinic for further investigation if there are any concerns. 


Support available

Babies eyes will be checked for any obvious physical problems as part of the new-born check.

Children will usually receive eye screening at 4 - 5 years old when they start school .

Free NHS sight tests are also available at opticians for children under 16 and for young people under 19 in full-time education. 

Support for children with special educational needs and disabilities

All opticians have a responsibility to make reasonable adjustments for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).  

For further information regarding support for children with SEND, contact your opticians directly. 

There is usually a cost when you visit the opticians. Some groups are eligible for free NHS eye tests or optical vouchers.


Who can access the service

Anyone can visit an optician.
