Overview

The Children and Young People Diabetes Service offers care to all children and young people aged 0 to 19 years with Diabetes. We are a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Consultant Paediatrician's with special interest in Diabetes, Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Clinical Psychologist and Paediatric Dietitians.

We educate and empower children, young people, and their families regarding their Diabetes from diagnosis and throughout all of the milestones until the age of 19 years when they are transitioned to the young person's team.

If a child or young person has Specialist Educational Needs or Disabilities, we work closely with the child, young person, family and various professionals that are involved in their care aiming to empower the child or young person, to manage their Diabetes, to their greatest ability.

We recognise that diabetes can affect children and young people differently, with some children experiencing low mood and / or depression so we have a Child Clinical Psychologist attached to the team who will work one to one with the child or young person, as well as with the family / school if needed.

Support available

We would take advice from the specialist team involved with the child or young person to determine the best way to help them to understand their diabetes and how this affects them. This may be to work alongside the key worker or school and adjust the educational tools used to suit that particular young person's needs; this may be in verbal, picture, video or word format. We would use British Sign Language interpreters if required.

We would aim for the treatment to be the most appropriate depending on the learning disability. So that would indicate if the child or young person used insulin injection pens or insulin pumps to administer insulin.

We can also use sensors to replace finger pricker testing if the sensory factors of the child or young person will allow.
