Overview

The Orthoptic service specialises in:

  • detecting eye movement defects
  • problems with how the eyes work together (binocular vision)

They carry out accurate vision assessments and investigate, diagnose, and treat patients of all ages with eye misalignment (strabismus / squint). 

Many of the patients include children and young adults with a range of additional needs.  


Support available

The team has experience in assessing children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The service tailor their examination based on the needs of each patient.  

They have access to a variety of equipment to provide an appropriate assessment  

You can contact the service before your appointment to discuss your / your child's needs, so any reasonable adjustments can be made. 


Who can access the service

There are no specific requirements needed to be eligible to attend the clinic.  


How to access the service

Referrals are made via the GP, health visitor, paediatrician or other healthcare practitioner. 

Once a referral is made, it is prioritised and placed in the appropriate clinic via the paediatric ophthalmologist or orthoptist.
