Transport will be a big part of where you can go to:

  • see your friends
  • take part in the community, and
  • take part in activities.

In South Tyneside, we want all young people to travel as independently as possible, so they can have experiences and make choices about where they learn, train or work.

Support is available to help you with travelling within South Tyneside and beyond:

Bridge Card

If you have difficulty using public transport you can request a Bridge Card from Nexus Travel Shops, libraries or South Tyneside Council.

The Bridge Card lets transport staff know that you may need extra support when using public transport.

This might include:

  • giving you extra time to find a seat
  • helping you to remember when you need to get off
  • help with counting out money
  • special equipment like ramps

You will need to carry the card with you when you travel on public transport within Tyne and Wear to let them know that you need support.

You can use the card within Tyne and Wear on:

  • The Metro
  • Buses (Go North East, Arriva, and Stagecoach)
  • The Shields Ferry

Learning to drive

You can apply for your driver's licence from 3 months before your 16th birthday.

Most young people can start learning to drive when they are 17 years old.

There are rules and restrictions on the types of vehicles you can drive.

See GOV.UK: Learn to drive a car

Motability Scheme

If you are eligible for the enhanced rate of mobility, the Motability Scheme may allow you to lease:

  • a car
  • a scooter
  • a powered wheelchair
  • Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV).

There are restrictions on the types of vehicles you can lease.

If you are a member of the Motability Scheme you can learn to drive and take your test when you are 16 years old.

You may also be able to get help with the cost of driving lessons.
